1. Kushari
This spicy and delicious meal is made up of rice, macaroni and lentils, topped with tomato sauce, garlic vinegar and garnished with chickpeas and fried onions. It is a perfect meal that is substantial, nutrient-packed and cheap.
This is a street food that is mostly eating at lunch. During the lunch time in Egypt, the locals are seen at shops lining for the delicious meals.
2. Ful wa Ta’meya (Egyptian Falafel)
This is a popular dish that can be found among the entire Middle East region. Ta’meya and ful mudammas, this famous Egyptian cuisine which are essentially fava beans and falafel are the original Egyptian fast foods.
They are a staple of the Egyptian diet, mainly because they are filling and use ingredients that are easily accessible in the country. The ful is made of fava beans that are cooked for hours in a pot called a qedra.
The ta-meya, which is an Egyptian falafel, is made out of crushed fava beans that is later made into a paste then fried. The dish is very healthy for vegans and very good to health.
3. Fiteer Baladi

4. Kofta and Kebab
Another meal that meat lovers would enjoy to taste is the Kofta and Kebab. Kofta is minced beef or lamb with plenty of spices thrown in, which is then rolled and grilled.
You could call it an Egyptian style sausage. Kebab is prepped with pieces meat such as lamb or veal that is grilled over a coal fire on a skewer. This meat dishes are always accompanied with sides of dips, rice, breads and veges.

5. Fatta
A Nubian dish that is commonly prepared for occasions mostly religious ones. The dish consists of layers of fried bread and rice, with tomato sauce cooked with garlic and vinegar on top, meat soup and large pieces of meat.

6. Hamam Mahshi
Hamam mahshi which is an Egyptian cuisine has many names like ‘’rats of the sky’’, and so on is stuffed pigeon and has been served in Egypt for centuries.
The pigeons are kept in mud brick lofts that can be seen along the Nile. The birds are stuffed with onions and spices along with a grain called freekeh, which is a green cracked wheat with a nutty flavour, or alternatively they are stuffed with rice or bulgur wheat.
Though Egyptians traditionally have hamam mahshi on special occasions, this dish is easy to find it on the restaurant menu.
7. Rozz Me’ammar
This dish is prepared from white rice prepared by the addition of milk, butter or cream and chicken broth. All the ingredients are baked in the oven and then usually served in occasions and family gatherings.
8. Mulukhiya
A green leafy vegetable chopped and cooked with garlic in beef, rabbit or chicken stew, and served with rice or bread. One interesting thing about Mulukhiya is that it gets prepared differently in different areas in Egypt.
For example, cities that are located near the coast usually prepare it with fish or shrimp. This dish is heaven and so worth try.
9. Shawarma
Although shawarma is not native to Egypt originally, it has become so as Egypt was part of the Ottoman Empire. Shawarma is layers of meat which could be lamb, chicken or beef that are placed on a spit and grilled, all day long.
The outer layers are then shaved off and chucked into a tasty hunk of bread or roll. Shawarma sangas are a big highlight.
10. Besarah
This is another perfect food for that can be enjoyed by vegetarians. Besarah is a green creamy mash prepared of parsley, dill, leek, grinded fava beans, spices, green pepper, and fried onions on the top. Besarah is mostly served with Egyptian bread and green onions.
11. Alexandrian Liver and Sausages
Belonging to street food but also cooked at home. The liver is prepared with spicy pepper, and garlic or onion may be added. As for the sausage, it is usually cooked in different ways, but mostly with tomato sauce and spicy pepper. They are both served with pickles.
12. Sayadeya
This dish is mainly cooked in coastal cities like Suez, Portsaid and Alexandria. It is made of white fish such as bass or bluefish, and cooked with yellow rice, onion, spices, and tomato sauce. It is then baked in an earthenware pot.
