Ghana is a beautiful country known for its stability, hospitality, natural resources and multiethnic with amazing dialects. The Ghana Language will help you to know more about the uniqueness of Languages spoken in the country.

What is the most common language spoken in ghana?

When it comes to the languages spoken in Ghana, there are almost eighty (80) languages that are spoken among the various ethnic groups or tribes in Ghana. However, the common or popular spoken languages include the following;

1. English

Most countries that were colonized speak the languages of their colonial masters and Ghana is not left out. The British colonized Ghana and for that reason, it speaks English. This language is officially used in the country in terms of government, education and business. It is widely spoken by many Ghanaians.

2. Akan (Fante/Twi)

The main native language spoken by about 80% of the Ghanaian Population is Akan. The principal members of the Akan clan includes the Ashanti, Fanti, Brong and the Akuapim but it is spoken at almost every part of the country. 

So to ask this question ‘’ How are you?’’  In Akan, you would have to say ‘’Wo ho te sen?’’

3. Ewe

The ethnic groups that speak the Ewe language are located in the Volta Region, in the south-east part of Ghana and it stretches to part of Togo and Benin. Ewes can also be found in almost every part of the country and this language is  taught in some schools in Ghana especially in the Volta Region.

4. Dagbani

Dagbani is a local dialect spoken by the people of Dagbon Kingdom in the Northern Region of Ghana and Burkina Faso. Due to migration for greener pastures and other reasons, languages such as Dabgani and the likes are spoken at every part of the country.

5. Dangme

The local dialect spoken by the Dangme people in the south-east part of Ghana (Accra east) is Dangbme but they can be found in every part of the country. This language is spoken by the people at these areas; Ada, Osudoku, Manya Krobo, Yilo Krobo, Shai, Ningo, Prampram and Kpone.

6. Dagaare

Dagaare is a language spoken by the Dagaaba people of the North-West and Upper-West Region of Ghana, Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso and it includes Birifor and Waale.

7. Konkomba

Konkomba is another local dialect spoken by the people of Ghana in the Northern, Volta, Accra, Eastern and Brong Ahafo Region.The Konkomba language has many dialects which include; Lichaboil, Ligbeln, Likoonli, Limonkpeln and Linafeel.

8. Ga

Ga is a language spoken in and around Accra, the capital of Ghana. This language is also spoken in some parts of Nigeria, Togo and Benin. The Ga language is taught in schools at Accra and it is a beautiful language to learn as in every part of the country, one can locate people who speak the language or belong to the Ga tribe.

9. Krache

Krache is one of the many Guang languages spoken by about 58,000 people in Oti Region in eastern Ghana especially in the Krachi West and East Districts.

This simple question will help you have a fair knowledge about the language; how are you? In Krache is “Aap kaise hain”? And the response would be “mei theek hun”.

10. Avatime

Avatime is another native language spoken by the people in the Volta Region of Ghana. The Avatime language is also known as Afatime, Sia or Sideme and the people who speak it live in these areas; Biakpa, Amedzofe, Gbadzeme, Vane, Dzogbefeme, Fume and Dzokpe. To say ”table” in Afatime is to say ”ɔ̀kplɔ̄nɔ̀”

11. Gonja

The Gonja is a North Guang language spoken by about 230,000 people mainly in the Northern and Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana. This language is used in some schools and it is officially recognized and it is spoken by about a third of the population of the Northern Region.  Eb-ee tow? Means ‘How is the house?’

12. Sisaala Tumulung

Sisaala Tumulung also known as Eastern Sisaala is a language spoken in northern Ghana near the town of Tumu and in Burkina Faso and is also spoken in the Upper West Region and Builsa in the upper East Region. The people who speak this language are about 105,000.

13. Sehwi

Sehwi is a Niger-Congo language spoken by over 305,000 people in the southwest of Ghana, especially in the Western Region. Sehwi people are Akans who live in the Western North and speak the Sefwi dialect. These are areas where the Sehwi people are located: Sefwi Wiawso, Sefwi Bekwai and Bibiani.

14. Nzema

Nzema is a language spoken by people located in the Southwestern part of Ghana and Southeastern of Ivory Coast. This language is effected by the Akan people. The population of the Nzema people is 658,000 and they live in these localities: Ellembele, Gwira, Jomoro and Evalue.

15. Wasa

Wasa is a native language spoken by about 273,000 people in Ghana mainly in the Wasa Amenfi East and Wasa Amenfi West and also in Ivory Coast. Areas where Wasa people live include: Tarkwa, Asankrangwa, Prestea, Daboase, Bogoso, Samreaboi, Mpohor and Bawdie and they are of the Akan dialect.

16. Sissala, West

Sissala is a local language spoken in Tumu town in the northern part of Ghana and in some part of Burkina Faso.  This language is spoken by about 10,000 people in Upper West Region particularly in the Lambussie, Zinni, Nieto, Nietie, Pererimi and Korru.

17. Ahanta

Ahanta is a local dialect that is spoken by the people of the Western Region of Ghana in Takoradi and Agona Nkwanta. They are Akan people of about 160,000 who live in the north and east of Nzema.

18. Cherepon (Kyerepong)

Cherepon is a Guang language in Ghana, spoken by about 111,000 people in the North East region and they are also located in the Eastern Region: Larteh North, Koforidua and Twi speaking areas.

19. Larteh

Larteh is another Guang language of southeastern Ghana spoken by about 74,000 people who habit the mountain areas in the Eastern Region. They are the largest tribe that successfully capture the minds Ghanaians with their language.

20. Anyin

Anyin is a Niger-Congo language spoken particularly in Western Ghana and Eastern Côte d’Ivoire which relates to Nzema and Sehwi. The people who speak this language in Ghana are about 1.5 Million and 1.45 Million people in Ivory Coast and are located in Sanwi kingdom, N’zi-Comoé and Zanzan.
