Eritrea is an African country which lies at the north eastern part of the Red Sea coast. It shares borders with Sudan, Ethiopia, and Djibouti. Its capital city, Asmara, is known for its Italian colonial buildings, like St. Joseph’s Cathedral, as well as art deco structures. Since every country or group of people have their emblem with its significance, lets explore about the Eritrea flag.

History of the Eritrea Flag

The Eritrea flag is a powerful symbol that represents the nation’s struggles, aspirations, and the unbeatable spirit of its people. It’s a symbol of pride, hope, and the relentless pursuit of freedom and self-determination. It traces its roots to the nation’s long and difficult struggle for independence from colonial rule.

Eritrea was colonized by Italy from the late 19th century to 1941 when the British took control during World War II. The country was under British administration till 1952 when Eritrea was united with Ethiopia. During this period, the Ethiopian flag was flown alongside the Eritrean flag which symbolized a complex relationship.

And in 1961, the Eritrean War of Independence began and lasted for three years. Finally, Eritrea gained control in 1991. The flag used during this period featured a blue field with a green olive wreath and a gold star – symbolizing hope, peace, and the unity of Eritreans in their quest for freedom.
