Ghana’s Black Star Square Is World’s Second Largest Independence Square
It is Independence month in the republic of Ghana and Adagya Blog is here to tell you some interesting facts about the Independence square. Did you know that the Black star square is the second largest in the world ? Now you know, let me give you some history about the square.
The Independence square of Ghana also known as The Black Star Square, is the grounds for the annual Independence Day celebration and all other national events for the republic of Ghana.
The Black Star Square of Ghana, was built by Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’ first president to celebrate the Independence Day from the British in the year 1957. It was coincidentally commissioned in 1961 when the Queen of Great Britain, Queen Elizabeth II visited the country.
The Independence square can seat about 30,000 people during national events. In 1998 on 24th March, the black star square was filled and crowded with over 500,000 people to host United State of America’s former president Bill Clinton during his visit to Ghana.
The Independence Square can be encapsulated or categorized into three main monuments which symbolize the fight for independence. They are ;
The Black Star Gate
This monument is centered in the Independence Square. On top of the Black star gate is the black star of Africa. It also has the inscription of AD 1957 AND ‘’freedom and Justice’’ in reminiscence of the independence obtained in 1957. It also has a beautiful surrounding of flowers and fountain of water used to beautify the facility.
The Liberation Day monument,
This monument is in remembrance of the veterans who were shot to death while protesting for their benefits as veterans of the world war II. These ex-service men fought for the British in the world war II but in their return to the Gold Coast (now Ghana),their benefits and jobs promised them were not fulfilled.
In a peaceful march to the residence of the then Governor at the Christianborg castle on 28th February 1948, under the leadership of Private Odartey Lamptey, Corporal Attipoe and Sergeant Adjetey, they were stopped by the colonial police. Their confrontations did not order well to the colonial police leading the firing of these veterans. The leaders were shot to death and lots of the protestors injured. The Independence Arch
This is also part of the monument which contains the monument to the independence of the Republic of Ghana. It is also the sitting place for Government officials and other special dignitaries during a national event.
