The History of Fort St. Anthony

Built in 1482, Fort St. Anthony was initially named Fort Santo Antonio in honor of St. Anthony, the patron saint of Portugal. The Portuguese used the fort as a trading post for gold, ivory, and other goods. Over time, it became a significant center for the transatlantic slave trade.

In the 17th century, the Dutch captured the fort and renamed it Fort Axim. The British later took control of the fort and used it as a center for trading and commerce. Following Ghana’s independence in 1957, the fort was declared a national monument.

Fort St. Anthony has a unique architectural design that reflects the influence of Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonial styles. The fort was constructed using stone and mud, and it consists of a courtyard surrounded by two-story buildings that served as offices, storerooms, and living quarters for soldiers.

The fort’s walls are approximately 4 meters high and 1.5 meters thick, designed to withstand attacks from the sea and land. The fort also has a small chapel, a prison, and a gunpowder magazine.
